After arrival in Persia, for the first time in two years, we saw bread and pancakes being sold. This made the world beautiful for us again. Apathy flew out the window and a will to live was restored. Meeting a lot of new people I learned that my father had already departed for England. As for the rest of my family the frozen Amu-Darya had caused them unfortunately to stay in Russia. I also learned that my brother Stanislaw had died as had auntie Bronka, my mother's sister, who had cared for me as a child. In fact my mother, brother Marian and sister Danusia were trapped in the USSR. However knowing Marian's resourcefulness consoled my fears for I knew he would not allow any harm to come to my mother and sister. After withstanding this tragic news, undergoing disinfection and having a bath following two years of slavery and treatment as a beast of burden, I was moved with my unit to Khanakin. Our next posting was Quizil Ribat where the unit received a few armaments. Gen. Sikorski provided us with some hope and cheer which was dashed following his death in Gibraltar.
