extracts
The boarding of the ship was kept under tight control and had to be accomplished walking on one's own feet. With us, was a family - three girls and a young, four-year old boy, who was sick. We wanted to get him through the barrier, but he was stopped and not allowed on the boat. I'm constantly thinking about him. As this was one of the last transports, there was a terrible crowd on the ship and there was no way one could sleep there. For one person even to squat down, it meant that someone else had to stand up. To reach the toilet was impossible. The heat was overpowering and so great was the stench, that even the wind at sea couldn't disperse it. It took us a day and a night and part of the following day to cross the Caspian Sea to Pahlevi.
