extracts
One day I heard that a list of Polish families was being drawn up for departure to Persia so I went to put my name down. On being informed that the registration was only for military families I began to cry. Seeing my despair a soldier, whom I did not know, came to me and asked me who I was, where I was from and so on, and then registered us as his nieces. As we conversed I discovered he was Sergeant-Major Szrot. From that day he began sharing his military ration of bread and soup with us. Meanwhile I found the orphanage housing Danuta and collected her from there on the day of our departure. When I returned to the barracks with Danuta I found Kazia in tears because, apart from her and a few soldiers who had been left hanging about waiting for me, everybody else had left for the train. We therefore went straight to the railway station where we found the entire train already full and it took some time for them to find room for us. The journey to Krasnowodsk passed without incident as did our transfer to the boat.
